Fred Shireman

Graduate Research Assistant

I am a Ph.D. student in Aerospace Engineering studying how microstructure affects carbon/carbon composite ablation using X-Ray Computed Tomography, Scanning Electron Microscopy, an Inductively Coupled Plasma torch, a Microwave Plasma torch, and anything else that produces a lot of heat.

I joined the CTFL group in the summer of ’24, immediately starting work to understand the various mechanisms that govern carbon ablation while also gaining experience using the various imaging tools necessary to investigate the microstructure of carbon/carbon composites. While most of my peers are involved in computational roles, I am tasked with the experimental side of things. I conduct experiments to further my research while additionally providing validation and imaging data to the rest of the team.

I spend my free time playing piano and guitar, traveling, woodworking, and cooking.
